Interplay and friends mix it up in Commonwealth musical celebration

Redditch Editorial 3rd Aug, 2022

JAZZ group Interplay will be mixing musical traditions from Commonwealth countries.

The Leamington outfit are preparing to present ‘Musical Exchanges’ which aims to explore and celebrate the way Commonwealth musicians have influenced each other.

‘Jazz Meets Dancehall’, at the Nelson Club in Warwick on Saturday (August 6), from 7.30pm, will celebrate Jamaican ska and reggae classics alongside South African township jazz.

Special guests joining the Leamington-based quartet will include celebrated trombonist Annie Whitehead and South African-born trumpeter Claude Deppa.

Many South African jazz musicians emigrated to Britain in the 1960s and 70s bringing a vibrant new energy to British jazz.

‘Indian Jazz Fusion’, at the Dormer Centre in Leamington on August 10, from 4pm, will see Interplay joined by classical Indian singer and dancer Awantika Dubey.

Awantika’s rhythmic movement, amplified by the bells on her ankles and stamping feet, should make a formidable partner to Interplay’s rhythm section. She and the band have explored both Indian material and Interplay’s tunes.

‘Musical Exchanges’ is promoted by In The Moment with support from the respective town councils of Leamington and Warwick.
