A GRANDAD has taken on his 500th marathon for charity.
Claverdon resident David Phillips ran the Stratford marathon on Sunday (April 27), taking the total miles the 75-year-old has ran to more than 13,000.
The dad-of-two set himself the challenge back in 1982 to complete 500 marathons for the Brain and Spine Foundation and raise £125,000. He began running in aid of the small charity after reading a newspaper appeal calling for supporters – and he has not stopped since.
And last weekend he reached his 500th marathon and beat his money-raising target, taking the total raised over the years to £130,000. He celebrated with a party at Cox’s Yard.
David said: “It was such a special day that I’ll never forget.
“I’ve had a great 37 years of marathon running, meeting great people all over the world. I would recommend it to everyone.
“Next, I’ll probably carry on running, probably only shorter runs for a while though.”
