#SilverTakeover event to encourage older people to go digital

Redditch Editorial 6th Aug, 2019

HISTORY buffs are going back to the future.

Our Warwickshire – a volunteer-led site focused on the county’s heritage – is recruiting older residents to temporarily takeover its social media pages.

The recruits will be based at the County Record Office in Warwick and will report on happenings at the likes of Market Hall Museum and St John’s House.

After a short lesson, they will begin by direct messaging and tweeting one another before learning more about the world wide web.

Site editor Benjamin Earl is encouraging followers to engage with the group during the #silvertakeover on Wednesday (August 7).

He said: “Often social media is seen as a young person’s tool and channels such as Facebook are already passé for a certain generation so we’re giving it a go to see how an older generation gets along with it.

“It has many benefits – the ability to communicate easily, along with an immediacy and an ability to chat.”

The event is part of Warwickshire Bytes – a project launched by Warwickshire Heritage and Culture to create an online record of objects and stories provided by the community.
