Garage owner fined after nine faults found on serviced car

Redditch Editorial 17th Nov, 2019

A GARAGE owner has been fined after a number of faults were found on a car booked in by undercover Trading Standards officers.

Charnjit Sekhon, trading as Binley Woods Service Centre in Rugby Road, was ordered to pay costs of over £11,000 after nine faults were found after a service on a Ford Fiesta.

Garage staff failed to top up either the coolant or power steering fluid, replace the fuel filter and check the tyre pressures.

The trader also claimed one tyre was on the limit with a tread depth of 1.6mm when the minimum depth of the tyre was actually 3.44mm.

Other failures included notifying the officer of a split wiper blade, noisy wheel bearing and the condition of the spark plugs.

One seat belt stalk was also trapped under a seat cushion indicating they had not been checked properly.

Deputy District Judge Jonas said vehicles could become ‘killing machines’ if not maintained properly.

In mitigation Mr Sekhon’s representative said he was of previous good character and there had been only one incident. He had also made changes to the quality control system.

Trading Standards spokesman Scott Tompkins said: “We rely upon garages to carry out car services properly so that we can have confidence our vehicles are satisfactorily maintained.

“Warwickshire Trading Standards will continue to carry out this important work to protect road users.”
