Redditch Editorial 22nd Mar, 2020 Updated: 22nd Mar, 2020

A MAN being treated for coronavirus at Warwick Hospital has died.

The man in his 80s passed away on Saturday (March 21) and had underlying health conditions. He is believed to have been the first patient to undergo care for Covid-19 at the Lakin Road site.

Any family members who recently saw the man will now be in self isolation.

Director of Nursing, Fiona Burton said: “Sadly we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at Warwick Hospital, and had tested positive for Covid-19, has died.

“His family has been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult time.”

In Warwickshire 17 cases have been confirmed, with two people dying at Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital. Both were older and had underlying health conditions.

South Warwickshire Foundation Trust – which runs Warwick, Leamington, Stratford and Shipston hospitals – has now stopped all hospital visiting due to the outbreak.

A message on its social media accounts read: “Unfortunately, due to coronavirus it is now necessary to stop all visiting to our hospitals, except on compassionate or parental grounds which should be discussed with the ward.

“Where possible please use alternative ways to keep in touch.”
