Les Liaisons Dangereuses at Leamington's Loft Theatre

Redditch Editorial 9th Jan, 2020

LES Liaisons Dangereuses will be looking to seduce audiences at Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

In 18th century France before the revolution, two decadent, aristocratic ex-lovers conspire in drawing rooms and boudoirs, competing in games of seduction and revenge. Their only thought is the pursuit of pleasure, which often comes at the expense of others.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a glimpse into the lives of beautiful rich people poised to denigrate and control everyone around them, including each other.

But when one of them actually falls in love, the real betrayals unfold.

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel caused scandal across the world. Just over 200 years later, in 1985, Christopher Hampton’s stage adaption opened to rave reviews at the RSC’s The Other Place in Stratford before transferring to London and winning the Olivier and Evening Standard award for best play.

The Broadway production was Tony nominated and the 1988 film adaptation of the play was nominated for seven Oscars and won three.

Loft production director, Sue Moore said: “We have been desperate for some years to secure the rights for Christopher Hampton’s exquisitely written play about sex and power.

“It has been said by many literary critics but it is probably the greatest stage adaptation of a novel that we have and the most skillful piece of writing.”

The production runs from January 22 to February 1.
