Panto to open curtains on Rugby Theatre's 70th anniversary year

Redditch Editorial 7th Jan, 2019

IS RUGBY Theatre really 70 years old this year? Oh yes it is – and the Henry Street venue’s annual panto will open the curtains on the anniversary year tomorrow (Friday January 11).

The amateur group, which has been performing to packed houses since the venue opened in 1949, is staging a production of the much-loved panto Cinderella.

The show, featuring romance, songs, comedy, a cruel stepmother and two vile ugly sisters, has been created by award-winning writer and Rugby Theatre member Nick Marsh alongside director Emma Bright.

Sophienne Duncan stars as Cinderella, with Mark Baird as Buttons and Robbie Bladon and Dave Goodwin as Ugly Sisters Pustula and Poxie.

The show also features dancers from Carrie Bianco’s Stage School.

Director Emma said: “Our pantos are always special – but with this year being our 70th, we are going all out to make it even bigger, better and even more full of fun and laughter.

“Nick’s done a lovely job with the script, and rehearsals have been a total joy. And I know ticket sales are going really well, so we can’t wait to get started.”

The show opens for a 14-performance run on Friday (January 11). Visit www.rugbytheatre.co.uk or call 01788 541234 for tickets.
