A SCHOOLBOY from Wythall boy has proudly flown the flag for Worcestershire at the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Table Tennis Championships National Finals.

Alex Setchell, a pupil in Year 6 at Meadow Green Primary School, competed in the Under 11s category at the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Table Tennis Championships National Finals.

More than 350 table tennis players representing 50 counties gathered at Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton last Saturday for the event.

Competitions were held at Under 11, 13, 16 and 19 levels for both boys and girls with Alex the Worcestershire representative for his age group after winning the qualifying competition held in Evesham in January.

Competition was tough and Alex found himself in a difficult group with some players ranked more than 100 places higher than himself, however he held his own and enjoyed the experience.

“I was proud to represent my county at my first schools’ tournament and test myself against the very best players in England,” said the youngster.

“The games were very hard but it was still good fun.”

The Under 11s competition was won by the top seed Jakub Piwowar who was playing for Devon.

Following the championships, the England schools’ table tennis committee will select representative teams to play in an international competition in June with teams from England, Guernsey, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland and Wales all competing.
