Bingo hall could go to make way for student flats

Redditch Editorial 4th Dec, 2019

A FORMER bingo hall could be razed to make way for student flats, if council planning officers approve.

Gala Bingo, on Fairfax Street in the city centre, closed earlier this year. An application has gone before the council’s planning department to demolish the hall and replace it with student accommodation.

Developers Code Students Ltd, based in Leicester, recently completed the construction of the tallest residential building in Coventry, next door to the site, opposite the former Coventry baths.

It has acquired a lease on the land for the old bingo hall from Coventry City Council.

The bingo hall was built in 2002, following the redevelopment of Pool Meadow bus station. It stands on the former car park of the larger bus station, which was built where Priory Baths once stood, but this was heavily damaged in the Coventry Blitz.

Planners are expected to decide the hall’s future by the end of the month.
