Coronavirus: Shakespeare's England boss says exploring Warwickshire countryside will boost wellbeing

Redditch Editorial 21st Mar, 2020

A TOURISM ambassador is urging residents to give their physical and mental wellbeing a boost with the help of the Warwickshire countryside.

Shakespeare’s England CEO Helen Peters says exploring the county’s countryside can help people stay active, while events and attractions remain closed, and also help relieve stress caused by the coronavirus crisis.

She said: “Warwickshire is home to some famously stunning scenery and backdrops, which is all too often forgotten, but it’s also the perfect place to visit during this worrying time.

“Walks, bike rides and picnics are the perfect way to get out and about while still remaining safe in the current circumstances and enjoying the stunning surroundings, so I am urging people to come and take advantage of this.

“Visitors from around the country come to enjoy the walks, canal paths and routes around Warwickshire’s top natural beauty spots, so we are encouraging local people to get out and explore the area during this difficult time, as long as you and your family have not been advised to self-isolate and you are not within the designated medically vulnerable group.”

Last week, a survey carried out by Shakespeare’s England – a membership organisation for

Warwickshire’s tourism sector – showed a total of 72 per cent of members had experienced a loss of revenue since the outbreak.

At that time the average losses were less than £5,000, but the serious changes in government advice this week, means the impact is rapidly increasing.

Mrs Peters added: “We have been speaking to members to ensure we understand and monitor the impact the virus is having and will have on businesses in the long-term.

“The travel and tourism industry is unfortunately particularly vulnerable to such a pandemic, and so we have been working to reassure our members that we will support them as best we can during this tough time.

“The industry needs short-term and long-term help to ensure that we survive and the chancellor’s announcement of £330billion loans and funding grants for smaller businesses in the hospitality sector is a welcomed decision.”
