HS2 delays bring about 'temporary temporary' greenway at station in Solihull

Redditch Editorial 25th Sep, 2020 Updated: 25th Sep, 2020

DELAYS to plans by HS2 Ltd to reroute the Kenilworth Greenway footpath have brought about a ‘temporary temporary’ footpath from Berkswell Station.

The Kenilworth Greenway, a former railway line connecting Balsall Common with Kenilworth, is to be relaid with rail as part of the HS2 project.

An update from Balsall Common Parish Council said: “Contractors for HS2 Ltd are building a temporary greenway parallel to the original route which will run from the current start near Berkswell Station to join up again just south of Burton Green.

“It is currently expected to be open in January 2021 but it is already delayed. Open for walkers, cyclists and horses, this will also provide a cycle access at Waste Lane giving a through cycle route from Balsall Common to Kenilworth, Coventry and Warwick University.

“Given that the temporary greenway is not ready HS2 Ltd has built some permissive footpaths close to the existing Greenway linking up with existing footpaths.

“The most significant is the one between Berkswell Station and the footpath off Old Waste Lane.

“This is a good quality path, just on the far side of the Greenway from Balsall Common.”
