Merged Solihull primary school set for new extension

Redditch Editorial 29th Nov, 2019

A SOLIHULL school is set to build an extension to accommodate pupils from a controversial school merger.

Olton Primary could have a new classroom block built on playing-fields at the site of the former Chapel Fields Junior School, in Lyndon Road.

In September, Chapel Fields merged with Daylesford Primary School, following poor Ofsted results for Daylesford and low capacity for pupil numbers.

The planning authority at Solihull Council has recommended councillors approve the school extension plans at a meeting on December 4.

In an agenda report to the planning committee, they stated: “The new teaching block would create a new state-of-the-art integrated teaching block that links to the school building via a glazed link.

“The proposal is of a modern design, which is aesthetically pleasing, has legible entrances from Lyndon Road and would enhance the quality and attractiveness of the school setting and provide for enhanced learning facilities for children of the area.”

Highways officers raised concerns about added congestion and parking issues, as the Chapel Fields site is close to St Margarets Primary and Lyndon School. In a survey of the school’s pupils, most said they came to school in a car.
