ENGAGED paramedics working on the front line have won Rugby School’s £10,000 wedding day in a competition set up to say thank you to NHS heroes.
Megan Baker and Tristan Holmes, who are currently living in Hinckley and working with the ambulance service in Coventry, were among almost 100 couples who entered the competition open to any NHS worker whose wedding day had been cancelled or whose marriage plans were postponed due to Covid-19. Tristan, 31, has recently recovered from the virus.
The prize worth includes a wedding ceremony at the historic school, catering for 50 guests, plus transport, cake, vouchers towards outfits, a live band and more – all donated by local businesses keen to contribute towards the couple’s big day.
Megan, 28, said she could not believe it when she received the good news from Rugby School Enterprises, which arranged the competition.
“It was the day before our planned wedding day when we received the call. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to actually win,” she said.
“We had initially been pragmatic about cancelling the planned wedding, but as the date approached, we did get more disappointed. Knowing we will have an amazing wedding next year completely makes up for that and we cannot believe how lucky we are.”
Megan added she had joked with her mum the day before that she had ‘put all her eggs into one basket’ and was hoping to win the Rugby School wedding.
“Little did we know that less than 24 hours later we’d be Skyping Tristan’s mum and step-dad breaking the news that we had won. Our family and friends are so excited and it is great to share good news in a difficult time.
“The best thing about winning is seeing the immense generosity of Rugby School and all of the suppliers who have donated their services. Since Friday we have spent hours looking through the different websites and we are so excited to meet everyone and see the venue when it is safe too.”
Megan and Tristan will be married at Rugby School during Valentine’s week on February 18 next year.
