Police target dangerous lorries and trucks on Warwickshire's roads

Redditch Editorial 27th Nov, 2019 Updated: 27th Nov, 2019

DANGEROUS lorries and trucks on Warwickshire’s roads will be targeted by a new specialist police team.

Warwickshire Police has launched a Commercial Vehicle Unit to crack down on commercial vehicles and hauliers which pose a risk to other road users.

The force says more enforcement is needed to detect and deter offences despite recent efforts to educate hauliers about the importance of road safety.

The new unit will check if drivers have driven too many hours, are driving too close to the vehicle in front, speeding or breaching weight restrictions, or driving with insecure loads.

Officers will also check the safety of vehicles, and whether private vehicles are being used for business use without appropriate insurance.

A police spokesman said: “We have been working tirelessly with many partner agencies – such as Highways England, the Health and Safety Executive, and the Road Haulage Association – for over a year now to target commercial vehicles as they are increasingly being involved in serious or fatal collisions.”
