Redditch Editorial 2nd Nov, 2016

REDDITCH’S Rio Olympian, Clare Cashmore has been given the Black Pear Tree Award to honour her achievements.

The Gold and Silver medalist was given the award during a ceremony in Evesham on Friday (October 28) where she was joined by fellow athletes, Lauren Rowles, Becky Redfern, Alex Gregory and Basketball Men’s Head Coach Haj Bhania.

More than 100 guests attended to see the swimmer receive her honour as part of the new scheme set up by World Class Worcestershire alongside Worcestershire County Council.

Amoung the visitors were Leader of the Redditch Borough Council, Bill Hartnett (Lab, Church Hill) and Mayor Joe baker.

Coun Hartnett said: “It was a great afternoon to recall the summer of Rio and to honour all our Olympians and para Olympians, and see the four athletes each presented with the black pear tree.

“It was great to speak with each of the athletes and I was particularly pleased to invite Claire to a future council meeting so we can congratulate her in Redditch on her two medals from Rio.”

Worcestershire County Council Chairman Tony Miller, who spoke at the event, said: “These awards are all about celebrating our county and the talent that is developed and encouraged through business, our young people and our residents.

“We hope that you will plant these trees in a place that reminds you of the achievement that made you the pride of the county and the inspiration for so many people out there who have now taken up sports as a result of your performances in Rio.
