Solihull Brownie first to go for Gold

Redditch Editorial 5th Dec, 2019

A SOLIHULL Brownie is the first in the Warwickshire region to achieve a new Girlguiding award.

Hannah Crowford of the 11th Solihull Methodist Church Brownies, received the Brownie Gold Award at the Advent Sunday service on December 1, at Solihull Methodist Church.

The ten-year-old took up the challenge of the Brownie Gold Award, which was launched in September 2018.

The programme covers all stages of Girlguiding, from Rainbows to Trefoil Guild, based around six themes.

The themes are ‘Know Myself’, ‘Express Myself’, ‘Skills for My Future’, ‘Be Well’, ‘Have Adventures’ and ‘Take Action’

Girlguiding UK said the themes empower girls to know who they are, have the confidence to express themselves, look after their own and others’ physical and mental well being, explore nature, use their voice to campaign and help others and to gain the skills to become independent.

To achieve a theme award a Brownie has to gain one interest badge, complete one skill and take part in 240 minutes of theme-related unit meeting activities.

Hannah achieved all six of the theme awards since the start of the award programme. This means she earned six interest badges, in charities, archaeology, inventing, collecting and grow your own.

Hannah said: “My most difficult badge to get was ‘grow your own’, I decided to grow a pumpkin but I wasn’t sure which was the pumpkin and which were the weeds!”

Over her three years in Brownies Hannah has gained 54 interest badges and she now joins the Girl Guides with a blank uniform to start again.
