Thieves target Myton Hopsices as charity puts out urgent appeal for support

Redditch Editorial 31st Mar, 2020

THIEVES have targeted The Myton Hospice’s distribution centre in Coventry.

One of the charity’s vans was stolen and its distribution centre ransacked on Sunday just hours after bosses put out an urgent appeal for financial support in light of the coronavirus crisis.

The thieves smashed a window to get in before opening the metal shutters from inside.

It is the third time in just over a year the charity – which has hospices in Warwick, Rugby and Coventry – has been targeted in this way.

The Ford Transit Van was donated by a local business in response to a plea for help following a previous theft.

CEO Ruth Freeman said: “We are shocked and saddened that someone would do this, particularly when we are already struggling with the financial impact of coronavirus whilst trying to maintain vital services for our patients and their families.

“We need to once again ask local people and businesses for their support to help us at this difficult time, and we don’t doubt that they will show us the generosity and compassion that we have seen before. Together we can make a difference and ensure we can care for the people who need us most, now and in the future.”

To continue its free end of life care, and support for families, the charity needs to raise £750,000 every month.

Due to the pandemic fund-raising events have been suspended and Myton’s 27 shops are temporarily closed.

Anyone with information about the theft, at the distribution centre in the Herald Business Park, should contact the Police on 101 quoting crime reference number 1440-29.The registration of the white Ford Transit Van is MW15 NKU.
