Warwick University student charged after armed police close Broadgate

Redditch Editorial 5th Dec, 2019

A WARWICK University student has been charged by police after gunshots were fired in Broadgate.

Xinge Zhang, from Jiangxi in China, is accused of causing panic in Coventry city centre by discharging a blank-firing pistol from a flat window above the square on Tuesday (December 3).

The 22-year-old has been charged with possessing an imitation firearm with the intent to cause fear of unlawful violence by West Midlands Police this afternoon.

It’s alleged the undergraduate student fired the imitation weapon numerous times from the Mercia Lodge student accommodation in Broadgate on December 3.

He remains in police custody this morning and is set to appear at Coventry Magistrates Court today (December 5)

Armed police deployed to the city centre at around 6pm as a precaution to protect the public.

Broadgate was cordoned off on Tuesday evening, but no-one was injured during the incident.

The University of Warwick has been approached for comment.
