West Mercia Police to use potentially life-saving mobile phone app

Redditch Editorial 19th Nov, 2019

WEST Mercia Police is using a new potentially life-saving mobile phone app which can pinpoint people to within a small space if they need help.

What3Words has divided the world into 3mx3m squares with each section having a unique three-word address which anyone can refer to if they need their exact location.

The randomly chosen word system is particularly useful for the emergency services if a person is in a rural location or between motorway markers.

Ch Insp Gareth Morgan said: “Being able to identify a caller’s exact location is incredibly important as sometimes when people call us it can be difficult for them to identify it.

“It means we can quickly establish where people are so we can get to them as quickly as possible which could really help save lives.”

He added it had already helped officers locate people and vehicles involved in crashes so the force was already seeing the benefits.

People can download it for free on their mobile phones from via the What3Words website, the App Store or Google Play.

Because it uses GPS, no data connection is needed and it operates when people’s phones are offline.
