Sporting start friendlies with win

Redditch Editorial 13th Aug, 2020

TWO headed goals from Leon Broadhurst and a volley by a trialist – namely club legend Jason Cowley – led Bromsgrove Sporting to a comfortable 3-0 victory at Studley on Tuesday, writes Max Banner.

In their pre-season opener, Sporting dominated the early passages of play and would only have to wait nine minutes for the opener as a Will Shorrock corner was headed home with authority by Broadhurst.

Shorrock almost bagged one himself moments later, but his effort was saved by the Studley stopper, before the Sporting man fired the rebound wide.

Full-back Jack Wilson forced his way into the box on the half-hour mark but could only shoot straight at the keeper, whilst Midland League Division One side Studley hit the crossbar with a speculative cross from the byline with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Eight substitutions were made at half-time and one of these – trialist B – along with Shorrock and Sam Collins had efforts saved by the Studley keeper in quick succession.

In the 77th minute summer recruit Josh Ezewele curled a shot just wide from outside the area after a menacing run towards goal and five minutes later trialist B crossed to trialist Cowley who netted with an acrobatic volley from 12 yards.

Broadhurst then netted with his second header of the game on 88 minutes and it was almost four in the final stages as Josh Quaynor had a shot from long range which was parried to trialist B, who hit the underside of the crossbar.

It led to appeals the ball had crossed the line, but these were ignored by the assistant referee.
