Businesses call on chancellor to kick-start growth

Redditch Editorial 10th Jan, 2020 Updated: 10th Jan, 2020

COMPANIES in the region want the new government’s first budget to kick-start strong economic growth.

Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire made the call after chancellor Sajid Javid announced this year’s budget would take place on Wednesday March 11, claiming it would open a new chapter for the UK economy and prepare it for the decade ahead.

Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Businesses want to have certainty as we begin a new decade.

“We are now calling for the chancellor and the government to deliver a budget that can give us the confidence to invest and the best possible conditions to grow after several years of uncertainty.”

British Chambers of Commerce co-executive director Claire Walker said: “Firms of all sizes need fiscal measures to alleviate the burden of high up-front costs and boost investment.

“The Chancellor must outline how he will make good on election promises of a fundamental reform of business rates, and we also need to see a moratorium on all new up-front costs for businesses.

“This is the first opportunity for the new government to demonstrate it listens to business and is serious about tackling the challenges holding firms back.”
