FLYING school Take Flight remains airborne at Wellesbournbe Airfield following its eviction date.
The biggest aviation operator at the site was the only business not offered a lease extension on the airfield after owner Littler Investments agreed to allow other tenants to continue operating.
The school was given a final date of October 29 to quit the airfield after a lengthy court battle to allow businesses – including two flying schools, a cafe and an aeroplane workshop – to get their tenancies renewed.
The owners had wanted to sell the airfield to housing developers.
But an agreement was prompted by negotiations between Littler Investments and Stratford District Council, which is looking to make a Compulsory Purchase Order to preserve the future of aviation at the site.
The agreement – which the owner can pull out of with 28 days notice – listed a condition to offer year-long tenancies to businesses where ‘constructive discussions’ have been made. Letters were sent out to all businesses on the site apart from Take Flight which lead the fight to safeguard the airfield’s future.
Despite the passing of the eviction date, Take Flight owner Mike Roberts confirmed, although the owner had returned the rent paid by the school, it had not yet been evicted.
The school has organised public meetings to discuss the long-term future of the airfield which Mr Roberts believes is not secured by the recent agreement.
According to the school’s Facebook page, it is hosting night flying events both this month and in December.
