More than 5,000 drivers caught speeding on Warwickshire's roads - in just two weeks

MORE than 5,000 speeding drivers were caught during a police crackdown in Warwickshire.

A two week campaign urged drivers to slow down and obey limits but many were not quick enough to heed the warning.

Officers and volunteers carried out speed checks across the county during which drivers were both warned and reported for speeding.

One driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and three were also caught by patrolling officers driving between 90mph and 100mph on Warwickshire’s motorways.

Figures over a two year period show 91 people were killed and 659 seriously injured in accidents where speed or loss of control was a factor. Police provided the statistics and information to encourage drivers to change their behaviour as part of the crackdown.

But during the two week enforcement which followed, cameras picked up more than 5,200 speeding drivers.

Insp Kirsty Clough was ‘disappointed’ at the number of people still caught speeding following the campaign.

She said: “Speed is one of the four biggest dangers whilst driving, called ‘the fatal four’, and the difference of a few miles per hour can be the difference between life and death. It is hard to understand why so many people continue to put their own life and the lives of others at risk by speeding on Warwickshire’s roads.

“We are asking people to slow down and drive at a speed that is appropriate to the road environment and conditions. Speed limits are there to protect the public and are a maximum not a target.

“The police seek to educate the driver to change their behaviour and for some of those drivers caught speeding during those two weeks, speed awareness courses will be offered to enhance this learning process.”
