Police help cyclists stay safe

Lauren Jeal 2nd Dec, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

POLICE are trying to keep cyclists safe on the roads of Redditch by handing out high-vis gear and advice.

Anna Higgins and PCSO Mike Smith set up their station at the top of Unicorn Hill today (Wednesday) as part of the Be Safe Be Seen campaign. Safer Roads Partnership, West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police have all teamed up to create the project which is aimed at helping bike users and preventing them from getting knocked off or hit now the winter has draw in.

They have also been setting up these stop points throughout Hereford and Stratford Upon Avon this week.

The officers will be stopping cyclists who they believe will not be visible enough on the road and are left vulnerable.

Miss Higgins said: “We really are trying to prevent anyone from being hurt now that it is getting dark much earlier. We are getting longer nights and darker mornings and we think it is really important to take preventative measures.

“No one is going to get in trouble today. It is not about enforcement but education and offering useful advice on how to stay safe.”

When the partnership carried out the scheme last year they saw more than 450 benefit from the advice given.
