Tourism boss reminds Warwickshire residents to 'discover their doorstep'

Redditch Editorial 24th Jan, 2021

TOURISM body Shakespeare’s England is encouraging people to discover the countryside on their doorstep during lockdown.

People are being reminded that, although attractions across Coventry and Warwickshire are closed – the great outdoors outside their front door is still available to enjoy.

With the third national lockdown now in force, the organisation is encouraging residents to experience their local countryside and rolling hills of the region.

Tourism boss Helen Peters wants people to use the next few weeks to reacquaint themselves with their natural surroundings while taking their daily exercise.

She said: “Once again we find ourselves in another national lockdown with businesses and attractions across our region unfortunately closed to the public.

“But there is still a way that people can discover Warwickshire and its surroundings by enjoying the walks, canal paths and beauty spots that we have to offer.

“There are so many areas of stunning natural beauty out there, and now’s a great time for people to actually see what is available in the county while staying safe and protecting their health.”

There are a number of walks and attractions whose parkland remains open to the local community including Compton Verney, Coombe Abbey and Kenilworth Castle.

Residents could also consider a walk around Warwick to take in historic buildings such as Market Hall Museum, the Lord Leycester Museum, St Mary’s Church and further afield Guys Cliffe.

There is also Jephson Gardens, Bancroft Gardens and Trinity Church in nearby Leamington, as well as gardens in Stratford, and Caldecott Park in Rugby.

Helen added: “Although unfortunate, this lockdown is once again a chance for local residents to see exactly what is on their doorstep.

“Last year we launched our campaign ‘Discover Your Doorstep’, which is still running. We would love to see people’s photos of their favourite local beauty spot, the place they stop and ponder when they are out and about as well as those gems of local knowledge about the history of that place to share with everyone.

“Make sure you get involved and share your images of attractions you want to visit in your area with the hashtag #DiscoverYourDoorstep.”
