Warwickshire Pride appeal for rainbow zebra crossing

Redditch Editorial 13th Feb, 2020

A RAINBOW zebra crossing could appear on the streets of Leamington.

Warwickshire Pride is asking Warwick District Council to allow a pedestrian crossing to be painted in rainbow colours during this summer’s Pride festival in the town’s Pump Room Gardens.

The group says rainbow crossings are a common sight in other areas during Pride events to show solidarity and support for the LGBTQ community.

A Warwickshire Pride spokesperson said: “Although this would be a fabulous thing to have, it’s about so much more than that. Our community is under attack. Leamington has the highest rate of hate crimes against LGBTQ people in the whole of Warwickshire.

“So many other towns and cities have rainbow crossings. Their councils recognise the importance of visible support for LGBTQ people. And of course it’s a talking point and an attraction that people may come to see. But it is about something much deeper.

“The councils in Warwickshire are behind the times and move at a glacial pace. But we’re determined to show there is support for this and that our community should have one. So many other towns and cities do. Warwickshire needs to stop being left behind.”

The group is asking members and supporters to email the council to about the rainbow crossing and may launch a petition if a response is not received.

This year’s Warwickshire Pride Festival takes place Saturday August 22.
