Astonishing victory leaves Millers on the brink of promotion

Redditch Editorial 14th Sep, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

FECKENHAM need five points from Saturday’s final match at home to Enville to guarantee promotion to Worcestershire League Division One.

The second placed Millers will go into the finale 20 points above third placed Chaddesley Corbett having sealed a remarkable victory at Lye on Saturday, when Chaddesley could only manage a losing draw at Evesham.

Jamie Reddish’s side now have their fate firmly in their own hands as they bid to seal runners-up spot behind Division Two champions Redditch Entaco.

After a heavy rain delay Saturday’s match was reduced to 35 overs a side, so Feckenham wasted no time in trying to bat Lye out of the game.

Openers Muhammed Idrees (66) and Daniel Bloomer (62) both impressed as Feckenham posted an imposing 249-9 declared off 34 overs.

However, at tea the skies opened again which forced a delay that many thought would derail Feckenham’s promotion bid, especially coupled with the news Chaddesley were still playing and were 53-0 chasing 195 to win.

The weather finally cleared, leaving Feckenham with a meagre 18 overs to bowl Lye out if they wanted to claim 24 points.

However, a staggering bowling and fielding performance in tough conditions saw Feckenham dismiss their hosts for 59 off just 10.4 overs to claim the most unlikely of victories.

Tom Coulson picked up his sixth five-wicket haul of the season with figures of 6-23 and Matt Henning was his partner in crime with figures of 4-19 to blow Lye away.

Captain Reddish said: “I cannot believe what I witnessed on Saturday.

“At tea watching the rain fall we thought we had been defeated by the weather, which is the most painful way to lose out on promotion.

“To bowl a team out inside 11 overs is a feat I’ve never seen and I don’t think I’ll see again, especially at such a crucial point of the season.

“We now have one final push to achieve our goals.”

Feckenham 2nds also had a day to remember as they were crowned champions of Division Two 2nd XI.

After the abandonment of their clash at home to Lye, the Millers sit 46 points clear of second placed Harborne – also promoted – ahead of Saturday’s final game at Enville.
