Battling Bank are unable to escape the drop

Liam Moakes 16th Sep, 2015 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

ASTWOOD Bank’s valiant attempt to secure Birmingham League Division Three survival ended in failure on Saturday as their five-wicket defeat at home to Worfield ensured they could not escape a bottom four finish.

As it happens, Steve Adshead’s side’s loss proved academic as final day victories for Pelsall and Whitchurch meant it would have been impossible for Bank to escape a bottom four finish whatever the result at Sambourne Lane.

Bank went into the final round of fixtures on the back of a four-match unbeaten run including three victories – one over champions C&R Hawks – but their late-season effort ultimately proved in vain and they will return to Worcestershire League Division One despite finishing above three teams – Worcester, Water Orton and Kings Heath.

If Worfield had produced their end of season form at the start they would have been real title contenders and were, probably, not the side Astwood Bank would have chosen to meet in their quest for one more win to ensure survival.

Redditch’s former Indian star Gagandeep Singh (4-34) and Patrick Butler (4-33) combined to dismiss Astwood Bank for 124 as only Andrzej Jagielski (28no) and Matt MacDonald (22) passed 20, before Will Cook (38) and Dan Plank (35) steered Worfield to a five-wicket win which saw them finish third in the table despite veteran Jon Summers (3-34) impressing in his eight overs.
