THERE were some impressive performances from Bromsgrove & Redditch Athletic Club members in the Midland Open Series competition over two days at the weekend at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

Ice and snow greeted B&R’s competitors for their first Midland Open competition of the year and the sprinters got to race under the covers in the High Performance Centre.

In the U15 men’s 60m sprint Matthew Griffin came second in his heat with a personal best of 8.40secs, whilst in the U15 men’s 60m hurdles Griffin finished third in his heat with a personal best of 15.57secs.

The U17 men’s 60m sprint saw Josh Pearson come second in his heat with a personal best of 7.35secs, whilst the senior women 60m sprints featured Joanne Frost winning her heat in a time of 7.97secs and Deborah Ricci ran 9.37secs to come fourth in her heat.

Frost also competed in the senior women’s long jump in which she leapt 5.30m.

In the senior men’s 60m sprints David Mould finished in second place in his heat in 7.38secs and Russell Hingley won his heat in 7.84secs.

Outside, B&R throwers were fighting against the cold, snow and ice but still managed to produce some good displays.

The U15 women’s discus saw Tayla Mullins finish fourth with a throw of 15.54m and in the U15 hammer she was third with 21.16m.

Kieran Valley won the U17 men’s shot put with a personal best throw of 8.79m which was an improvement of 74cm and he also triumphed in the U17 discus as he threw 20.13m.

There was victory for Miriam Perry in the senior women shot put with 7.21m and she also claimed top spot in the senior discus with a throw of 21.21m.

Juliette Warburton was second in the shot put with 5.45m and also runner-up in the discus with 16.30m.

In the javelin Perry finished third with 24.50m.

B&R’s throws coach Sam Cater was in fine form as he won three events, including the senior men’s shot put with 10.83m, the discus with 30.29m and the hammer with 31.70m.

Cater, who also finished second in the javelin with a throw of 40.25m, said: “It was a very successful weekend for some of Bromsgrove and Redditch’s track and field athletes so early in the year.”
