Byfield: Tough times will make me stronger

Redditch Editorial 9th Feb, 2017

DARREN BYFIELD believes the tough time he is enduring as Redditch United manager will stand him in good stead for the rest of his managerial career.

The Reds boss has seen his side lose five Southern League Premier Division matches in a row and fail to win in seven, whilst also failing to score in the past four.

However, Byfield believes his team can take credit for their performances in their two most recent encounters – a 2-0 defeat at second placed Merthyr Town which was followed by Saturday’s loss at home to leaders Chippenham Town by the same scoreline.

“It’s been a testing time for the players and myself in particular, there’s absolutely no denying that,” said Byfield.

“We are in a run in which every mistake we make seems to get punished, but nobody is hiding and I think the lads are showing plenty of character. Everyone is playing for each other and determined to turn things around.

“Given how we competed, any stranger watching on Saturday would not have known it was a team without a win in six playing against the leaders.

“How they didn’t have a man sent off when Max Loveridge goes through on goal and is hauled down is beyond me. It’s a red card and possibly a penalty, although it was difficult to say for sure as the trip was right on the edge of the box.”

Byfield, who is hoping to make a couple of attacking additions to his squad imminently, has made no secret of the fact his side were always facing an uphill battle to secure a play-off place this season, but does accept improvements are needed.

“I know the fans are not happy and they’ve every right to feel this way,” he added.

“It’s a massive test for us at the moment but I know the strength of my character and have belief that my mentality and attitude will remain strong.

“I want to be a manager for a long time yet and know this will not be the first or last time I have a tough time of it. The key is to remain positive, learn from your mistakes and show belief.

“I believe we can turn things around and have a positive finish to the season.

“The team needs more firepower, that’s for sure, because I don’t want to be playing and Gaz Singh has left the club, but I am hopeful on new arrivals.”

Byfield’s 13th placed side now have more favourable fixtures on the horizon, starting with Saturday’s visit to lowly Hayes & Yeading United – the first of five matches against teams currently in the bottom six.

“If we play like we’ve done in the past couple of matches, then I’m confident positive results are coming,” said Byfield, who has seen centre back Jim Mutton complete a switch on contract to Conference North outfit Nuneaton Town.
