Engineers go top of the pile

BY MAINTAINING their unbeaten start to the Swan Studley Skittles League season, Engineers went top and consigned opponents Swingers to bottom spot.

Swingers found themselves 18 pins down after leg one, before salvaging a consolation point by narrowly winning leg two.

However, that was their last resistance as Engineers built on their advantage to run out very comfortable winners.

For the losers, Larry Hanks recorded his side’s best indvidual score of the season with 40 (14-stack) and Paul Clifton made 35 and Darren Harman 34.

Engineers had captain Andy Clewlow making 41 and Ian Greenway and Mark Ganderton 37 each.

After a mixed start to the season, last season’s runners-up Maudslay found form to beat reigning champions Alcester Nomads in the best game of the week and knock Nomads off top spot.

Maudslay were only four pins up after leg one, level after leg three and then two down after the fourth leg.

They then scored 69 pins in their last leg to set Nomads 68 to win, which proved just too much for Nomads.

For Maudslay, Dean Watson scored 43 (15-stack), Tom Roberts 37 (ten-stack) and Paul Matthews 36, whilst best for Nomads came from Alan Cummings 45 (14-stack), Bob Browning 40 (13-stack) and Margaret Povey 36.

Well Developed looked set for their second win of the season with a 21-pin lead after two legs, only to squander it with low scores in the next three legs.

Opponents Chris & Gerry Show took full advantage and, when finally left 59 pins to win, they made it comfortably with a last leg score of 65.

C&G Show’s best scores came from Craig Sears with 40 (12-stack) to record his side’s best individual score so far, Arthur Sears scored 36 and Paul Hollis and Dave Williams 32 each.

For Well Developed, Janina Brennan had an 11-stack in a total of 35, Jim Child made 34 (11-stack) and Martin Brennan also 34.

Swan recorded a welcome first win of the season when beating opponents Lodge Farmers and, as a result, the teams swapped places in the table.

Illness-hit Lodge Farmers played a man short and were no match for Swan, who had Mel Bayliss making 40 and captain Helen Racki and Dave Maule 37 each.

Lodge Farmers did narrowly win two legs thanks to stacks of 13 and 11 respectively from Steve Smith and captain Glyn Morley who both finished with 39.

Results: Swingers 2 points (277 pins) Engineers 9 (333); Maudslay 8 (336) Alcester Nomads 3 (330); Chris & Gerry Show 8 (305) Well Developed 3 (296); Lodge Farmers 3 (278 – nine players) Swan 8 (305 – nine players and 326 – ten players).
