Kings grind out victory

Kings Norton 19 Coventrians 0

Midlands Four West (South)

KINGS made hard work of completing the double over a much-improved Coventrians side who showed dogged defence on Saturday.

A much-changed Kings team opened strongly from the kick-off and their forward-dominated attack pressurised their visitors’ defence and, after a particularly good first ten-minute spell, Ben Boyce crashed over for Kings’ first score which skipper Shane Rees converted.

The unpredictable wind caused both sides difficulty with kicking out of hand and, with defences holding strong, the game was in stalemate for long periods.

Finally, on the stroke of half time, Kings’ stronger forwards broke through and Chris Hands collected the ball and dived over for an unconverted try to give his side a 12-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw a similar pattern of play, with the defences cancelling out each other’s efforts to dominate play.

Any moves by the back divisions to widen their attacks fell foul to penalties or mistaken options, but overall Kings remained in control of this well fought match and midway through the second period a typical bulldozing run by Will Greenwood saw him power over for a decisive score converted by Rees.

Coventrians dug deep and thwarted any further scores to deny Kings a try bonus point.

Fourth placed Kings’ next league game is at Coventry Welsh on March 21.
