Rain fails to halt table-topping Redditch Entaco's charge

LEADERS Redditch Entaco will be bidding for more of the same when they complete the first half of the Worcestershire League Division Two season at Bromyard on Saturday.

The Kingfishers cemented their 37-point advantage over second placed Chaddesley Corbett courtesy of an eight-wicket victory over visitors Wormelow in a rain-affected match on Saturday.

Redditch made one change to their side as Rizwan Choudry replaced holidaying skipper Gregg Chinn and stand-in captain Waqas Ali won the toss and made the wise decision to field.

With the prospects of rain looking increasingly likely, Redditch struck early and reduced Wormelow to 27-3 as Ali with two wickets and Noman Choudry with one did the damage up front.

However, Wormelow’s overseas professional Lachlan Hartley showed his capabilities by making 99 off 109 balls against what is proving to be the best attack in the division.

His knock aside though, there was no contribution of note other than an unbeaten 23 from number ten Alastair Main as the visitors could only muster 173-9 off their 50 overs.

Ali took 2-17, Noman Choudry 2-15, Southwick 2-34 and Rizwan Choudry 3-29.

As the players were having their teas, rain struck and a hailstorm led everyone to believe the game would be abandoned.

However once the rain had stopped, great work on the ground from skipper Ali and youngster Jack Roberson led the umpires to deem the pitch suitable for play, with 22 overs having been lost to rain.

Redditch, who will have to do without the services of Chinn again this weekend, were set a revised target of 97 off 28 overs and this proved to be an easy task for the leaders as Rizwan Choudry smashed 31 off 15 balls to cap a man of the match performance before a steady unbeaten 33 from vice-captain Southwick saw the hosts to 20 points as they reached 97-2 in the 17th over.

ASIF MUKHTAR smashed a fine unbeaten 136 as Redditch Entaco 2nds enjoyed a 40-run Division One 2nd XI victory at Pedmore.

Marlon Lokenath (93) and Olly Mason (59) also shone with the bat as the visitors posted a commanding 365-5 from their 50 overs.

Pedmore opener Jack McDonnell was in no mood to concede defeat and he cracked a fine 148, but it was not enough as Kevin Lokenath (2-67) and captain Geoff Eley (2-28 off six overs) ensured the hosts fell short of their target, ending on 325-8.

Fifth placed Redditch 2nds host Belbroughton on Saturday.

THERE were defeats for the 3rds and 4ths as Hallow took the points.

The 3rds could only muster 120-9 on their Division Five travels as Faizan Ahmed (41) and skipper Will Feast (30) led the way, but Hallow wasted no time with the bat and lost just one wicket in reply.

An entertaining day’s cricket at Entaco saw Hallow squeeze home by 23 runs against the 4ths in Division Five 2nd XI as their opener Graeme Fowler led the way with an excellent 76 in a total of 188 all out.

In reply the Kingfishers were on target as a half-century partnership between Dean Ottley (31) and Nick Little (25) gave them a platform, but a middle order collapse saw Redditch suffer.

However, an excellent partnership between teenagers Sam Bonsall (52no) and Owen Edwards (27no) saw Redditch finish their innings on 165-7 as the pair added an unbroken 79 for the eighth wicket.

On Saturday Old Elizabethans provide the opposition for Redditch 3rds (away) and 4ths (home).
