SOME of Bromsgrove & Redditch Athletic Club’s throwers headed off to a windswept Tipton on Sunday to open the track and field season at the Vera Wood Memorial Games.

In the U15 women’s event Tayal Mullings made her debut for the club in the discus competition and set herself a personal best of 13.88m in ranking fourth on the day.

The U17 women’s event saw Heather Knight brush off her sprinting spikes first to give the 100m sprint a go and she came sixth with 15.9 seconds and then went on to the javelin event in which she came second with 24.67m.

Julie Wakelam got her season off to a fine start with a PB in the senior women’s hammer and first place with 27.40m, a first place in the shot put with a PB of 6.96m and then a season’s best in the discus with a throw of 20.58m as she claimed a superb total of three gold medals on the day.

The Bromsgrove and Redditch AC senior men’s throwers had a good day and enjoyed some friendly rivalry throughout the competition.

The hammer was first event of the day and saw Richard O’Connor claim second place with 36.16m and Sam Cater was not far behind with 34.29m for third place.

Javelin was the next event of the day in which both O’Connor and Cater competed and the latter came away with first place and a season’s best of 45.88m and O’Connor was third with 27.57m.

The shot put event saw Cater win gold with a throw of 10.92m, O’Connor finish fourth with 8.52m and Vito Ricci open his season with a PB of 7.56m and sixth place.

The final event of the day was the discus in which O’Connor claimed third place with 28.91m, Cater was fourth with 26.57m and Ricci threw another PB to seal fifth place with 23.89m.

This was a good haul of medals and PBs to start the season with for Bromsgrove & Redditch AC’s throwing group.
