Valiant effort falls just short

ALTHOUGH always behind in their mid-table clash against Chris & Gerry Show, Well Developed nearly pulled off a great win in the Swan Studley Skittles League.

The game was close for two legs before C&G Show built a lead of 20 pins going into the last legs and finally left their opponents requiring a massive 80 pins for victory.

Well Developed were well on target at the halfway stage thanks to an impressive 15-stack from top scorer Terry Buck but the remaining bowlers could not quite get their side over the line.

For C&G Show, it was their highest team total this season and a season’s double over their opponents, with Craig Sears making 40 (11-stack), Rita Passey 35 and Arthur Sears 34.

Terry Buck finished with 40 pins for Well Developed, who had Martin Brennan scoring 37 and 34 each from Margueritte Bayley and Janina Brennan.

For Lodge Farmers, captain Glyn Morley for Lodge Farmers produced his team’s highest individual score of the season with two stacks of 14 and 13 in a total of 46.

It helped his side stop a three-game losing run as they overcame Swan, who are now without a win in three.

Lodge Farmers, 16 pins up after two legs, wobbled with a poor third leg total of 49, but turned the game their way again to lead by 14 pins going into the last legs.

Swan could not manage a big final leg score and left Lodge Farmers needing only 45 to win, which they got with ease.

Other good scores for the winners were Alan Rumble 42 (15-stack) and Tim Jones 35, with Swan’s responses coming from Graham Howells 39 (15-stack), Al Lumb 38 and Sally Racki 33.

Alcester Nomads consolidated their second place in the league with a win against nearest challengers Maudslay, who slipped to a second successive loss.

Nomads took the first two legs, only for Maudslay in leg three to turn a nine-pin deficit into a single-pin lead.

Nomads’ response was to score 79 pins in the next leg to then lead by 11 pins and finally leave Maudslay requiring 74 pins to win, which they rarely looked like making.

For Nomads, Geoff Lout made 43 (15-stack), Bob Browning 39 (10-stack) and Mac Eaton 36, while for Maudslay the best were Paul Matthews 38 and 34 each from Mark Sanseverino (12-stack), Geoff Mayneord and Dick Walters.

Results: Chris & Gerry Show 8 (318) Well Developed 3 (315); Lodge Farmers 9 (322) Swan 2 (307); Maudslay 2 (316) Alcester Nomads 9 (328).
