White Hart miss out on cup glory

Redditch Editorial 22nd Sep, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016

WHITE Hart failed in their bid to lift the Sid Stephens Rose Bowl, losing in the final to Weoley Castle WMC under the floodlights at Kings Norton Bowling Club.

The Redditch club began well with wins for Matt Higgins (21-9) and Ian Humphreys (21-18), but that was as good as it got unfortunately and they could not achieve any more individual wins.

White Hart captain Mick Perrins would like to thank all the many team supporters who helped to make a great atmosphere at the venue.

The defeat was repeated on Sunday morning as the clubs met once more in the Northfield & District League.

Matt Higgins again won his tie accompanied by a win for Ray Richards, but six defeats meant Weoley Castle ran out comfortable winners.

Weoley clinched the Division Two title as a result, with White Hart now having only a faint chance of promotion when they visit second-placed The Maggies in their final match this Sunday.

White Hart B still have promotion chances in Division Four despite an unfortunate defeat at Hall Green B, where they could only field five players. Wins for Tom Hawkes (21-7), Kirk Wright (21-13) and Neil Laxton (21-16) gave them three points but they will need to win their final three matches convincingly to gain a place in the higher division next season.

In the SW Birmingham League, White Hart B, captained by Kate Broome have achieved promotion from Division Four by finishing in second place just six points behind champions Solihull RBL.

And Harts B team, led by Brian Chatterley, also had promotion confirmed in the Heart of England Over 60s League Division Three after easily accounting for Mount Pleasant/Portland Road at home 120-62.

Wins for Ken Brown (21-2), Anne Batchelor (21-5), Shela Humphreys (21-10), Rob Faulks and Kirk Wright (both 21-12) keeps them in second spot and they cannot now be overtaken.

White Hart A also gained a 116-103 victory at Yardley Wood Social in Division One, with winning cards from Ray Richards (21-7), Graham Arnott (21-15), Tom Hawkes (21-20) and captain Mike Estell (21-19). They will end the season in a respectable seventh position.

In the Warks and Worester Premier Division Five, White Hart gained their first away win in the final match of the season when they defeated The Raven by three shots. Wins for Dave Kings (21-7), Norman Batchelor (21-8), Ken Brown (21-9), Matt Higgins (21-11), Rob Faulks (21-18) and a fine effort from Anne Batchelor, who recovered from 0-15 down to only lose 17-21 could not, however, prevent the team from finishing in a relegation position.
